Thesis statement

The counter IED operations have had variable success. Their success can be ensured if more attention is paid on dismantling the networks that emplace these devices rather than focusing more on preventing their detonation. Despite the advances technology, preventing the detonation of these IEDs becomes an impossible task as the nature and types of IEDs used is changing constantly, especially with the use of remote control IEDs.

Introduction

An IED or improvised explosive device is a form of a conventional weapon that maybe used in any form and detonated in various different ways. They may be used to target both soldiers and civilians. The IED have a long history, but have gained prominence in current conflicts. They play a significant role in current wars such as the war in Afghanistan. They will be a part of the environment where the coalition troops are operating (NATO, 2012).

The casualties suffered by the NATO troops increase with each passing day, and it is estimated that almost half of all the casualties suffered are on account of IEDs. Apart from being the central cause of heavy casualties on the civilians, they also unleash heavy sufferings on the side of the civilians as maintained by the United Nations. Keeping in mind the heavy casualties sustained by the NATO, the coalition in Afghanistan have taken different steps to counter the threat of improvised explosive devices through various operations. Since the only documented and the most advanced operations to counter improvised explosive devices are linked to the efforts of the alliance in Afghanistan, this paper will discuss these efforts and operations (European Defense agency, 2012).

Discussion

Many operations have been initiated to curb the risks exposed on account of improvised explosive devices. These operations referred to as C-IED have been implemented by the coalition members and their partners. The main emphasis on such operations is laid on educating, training and doctrine development. C-IED is also made effective by improving the counter measure technologies. The counter improvised Devices action plan centers on two central areas of focus. These are firstly, attempting to defeat the device itself, and secondly, disrupting the network. The operation to counter improvised explosive device is planned by different branches of NATO. These braches look for ways to ensure the detection of improvised explosive device and their neutralization. The operation plan also involves preparing and training the soldiers according to the improvised explosive device environment. The technology is developed with the aim of preventing improvised explosive device attacks and protecting the soldiers.

The C-IED operation is not merely aimed at preventing and neutralizing the IED after it has been planted. It is also related to the identification and disruption of the different networks that are involved in creating and initiating the improvised explosive device. The C-IED operation also focuses on targeting networks that implant improvised explosive device.
