Introduction

The aim of this report is to provide information regarding the usefulness of counselling theories and skills in supporting children education. The role of supporting children is important for parents and teachers in order to enable them to score good grades in schools. The report will particularly focus on the importance of self awareness and the development of interpersonal skills in supporting children.

Discussion

Counselling is a broad term that covers a variety of talking therapies. It is conveyed by trained practitioners, who work with persons over a small or lengthy period to assist them carry about effectual change or improve their health and happiness. Counselling is a specialized and skilled action that develops an interpersonal connection to allow persons to build up self understanding and to make a modification in their lives.

The main focus of counselling is towards definite troubles, like adjustments in life and development of health of clients. Counselling is a type of mental, emotional, psychological or talking therapy that proposes persons a possibility of living a better life and to change their feelings. Counselling offers a regular freedom space and time for individuals to converse about their dilemmas. It also offers to explore complicated views and feelings in an atmosphere that is reliable, confidential and free from interruption (Ungar, 2011).

The different counselling theories can play vital role in supporting children to develop skills that are required for them to achieve a success in their education and future professional career.

Self Awareness

Self awareness is capability of humans in recognizing themselves as separate individual from other individuals and the environment. It is important for children to have self awareness about themselves. It can enable them to have a better picture about their skills, capabilities and knowledge. According to Rochat (2003), the concept of self-awareness can be seen as most important fundamental subject in the field of psychology, including an evolutionary and a developmental perspective. There are five different levels of self awareness in which children are able to identify themselves as unique entity and differentiated from the world.

The process of self awareness starts when a child is born. He/she has the ability of identifying himself/herself as separate from others. When children are at around age of 2 years, they develop self consciousness like pride or embarrassment in various situations including competitive games and mirror exposure. This process of self awareness keeps on continuing till very long time. There are many benefits of developing self awareness skills in a child. For example: a child will be able to evaluate his performance by using the self awareness capabilities. It can enable children to have a perception about them. This perception can enable them to bring any desirable changes in modifying behaviour that can enhance their capabilities.
