Counseling

Background

The Asian American culture is spread out in almost all of the United States. These people have been living in America since decades. They are known to be Americans of Asian descent (Kang, K. C., 2002). The general term includes Chinese, Indian, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese as well as Japanese. These are the prominent migrants along with other Asians. They people make up a substantial population of the United States. The person I am going to interview is an Indian by origin. His parents migrated to United States nearly 16 years ago, when he was only 6. He was born in the city of New Delhi and has faced various issues since migration. I would try to highlight these issues and propose the correct solution as well as present a report on my understanding. In my counseling, I plan to address subjects including stereotyping and racism. Stereotyping is an adopted belief, regardless of it being true or not (McGarthy, C. 2002).

Discussion

Mr. Hyder is one of my neighbors. I have noticed him around but I have never tried interacting with him, mainly because of the lack of time. When I was given this task to interview another culture, I thought of asking him as he has had good terms with my father. When I met him, I asked him if he could spare some time so I could interview him. He was too humble and agreed instantly. The questions of my interview were:

Q.1

“Hello Mr. Hyder. Where are you from and what do you do?”

Ans. 1

“Hi, I am from New Delhi, India. I have living in the United States since 20 years. I am currently thirty two years old and am a teacher in a nearby University. I am an American national now and wish to live the rest of my life here with my wife and kids”.

Q.2

“Has your cultural background been able to influence your psychological process?”

Ans. 2

“Off course it has. It is one of the things I have been trying to improve since I had moved here. I never view any of the other cultures like the typical Americans. I never call them with their catch phrases like Hispanics or Nigers. I always use the words like African Americans or Latinos. This highlights their cultural background as well as their heritage and I personally think they have nothing to be ashamed of. They are who God made them to be. And there is nothing embarrassing about that. This is exactly what I am trying to teach my children. So they could stand up high and face the world and even change it by adapting a non-violent, civilized approach”.

I took this person to be backward or embarrassed, trying to become like a white American. But I was surprised by his level of confidence and his approach towards the matter. He already knew what I was going to ask next. I have some other Asians to be aggressive towards the matter but this individual has been extremely calm and kept smiling ...
