Implications of Correctional System in United States

Introduction

The world has mainly considered the United States as a disciplined nation. The growth in the population may not be the only reason but one of the main reasons of increasing crimes. There are different nationalities living in the same country. A few states are densely populated as compared to other states. At present people still do not have an access to nation's correctional facilities. Majority of the crime experts holds positive views on keeping incarceration facilities in the country. According to them, United States has become one of the most violent and ferocious industrialized country. The chances of being murdered, at present, in United States, are six times more than in United Kingdom. People believe that incarcerating offenders is imperative to maintain peace in the society. Steve Levitt conducted his research and found that an additional of 15 crimes take place every year whenever an offender receives a release from the incarcerating prison. Yet, there are other crime experts who deny all these facts and support the idea that such crime rates are common in countries of a similar nature. However, the question arises about the systematic allocation of the needed attention to offenders and helps them to adopt a clean life once again. This research paper aims to explore the idea of the correctional system, its historical background and numerous punishments given to offenders (Slevin, 2006).

The Correction System

It is a system that focuses on correcting the undesirable and severe behavior and attitudes of the people. The ones who commit crimes receive a name as 'offenders'. Earlier correctional system was confined to certain limitations of thoughts like dark gloomy jails where the offenders have scarce food to eat and 'rate spread' to lie. The system has undergone immense changes as compared to old practices. The actual development started in 1970s. More Americans began to experience correction systems right from jails, small imprisonment, probation and parole and community correction services. It is now quite common for people to come in contact with incarceration on the basis of any above mentioned scheme. No doubt the crime rate declined noticeably i.e. it dropped by one-third in the span of 1993-2000. Common man fails to understand that the crime rate did not complement the incarceration efforts. It is due to the fact that justice policies for criminal did not give a match with the requirements. The crime rate declined in 2000 but later picked up a fast pace of growth. By 2003, it grew to 2.6 percent domestically (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2013). This requires the government to pay close attention on executing correct measures to formulate and update correction systems (Edge, 2009).
