Task 1

Identification of Organization's Strategic Position and Business Model

Salford city council is an organization that provides services to its residents and makes efforts to improve the lifestyle, wellbeing and overall environment and facilities of the city (Salford.gov.uk, 2013, A-1). The strategic position of Salford City council tells that this council stands in a position where the members of the council know what they exactly need to do to accomplish their mission and vision. The organization has a clear mission. The mission of the organization is as follows (Simon, 2004, 1):

“To create the best possible quality of life for people in Salford”

The evaluation of the components of mission statement is attached in appendices as appendix number one. This evaluation of the mission statement suggests that the mission of the organization implies core elements but still there are certain factors that are missing and not addressed in the mission of the organization.

After the mission statement the next factor is of the objectives of the organization. The Salford City Council's objectives include: improving the health, enhancing the life style, reducing the rate of crime, creating prosperity, encouraging and facilitating leisure and creative activities, promotion of inclusion and investing in young people (Simon, 2004, 1).

SWOT analysis is a tool that reflects the position of an organization thoroughly and completely. The chart of SWOT is included in the appendices as appendix number two. The SWOT analysis shows that most of the aspects and functions of the organization can be considered as strength and there are very few weaknesses and threats. With the help of strategies that are in place at Salford City opportunities can be exploited through strengths and by overcoming weaknesses that are very few and easy to deal with the intensity of threats can be lowered down.

BCG Matrix

In this matrix the market share is considered as the extent to which the Salford County Council is able to achieve its objectives and growth rate is considered as the frequency with which it has achieved its objectives. As the Salford County has launched different programs to achieve its objectives so it can be said that most of the objectives of the organizations are achieves and some of them are in progress. Salford County is taking actions frequently to bring improvement in the lifestyle of the dwellers of the county so it can be said that the frequency with which Salford County undertakes various projects to improve the lifestyle of the dwellers is high. On this basis, Salford County qualifies for stars. Salford County is star because it earns a lot of cash from its various projects such as from its tourism, arts and culture projects but at the same time the county spends the money back in the development of the county.
