Introduction

This chapter presents the description of the data and findings which have been collected through the extensive research process undertaken to complete the research study at hand. The qualitative research in this dissertation is performed by searching for data in online journals, libraries, publications and various websites.

Discussion

The literature review, discussed in the Chapter 2 of this study, has elaborated Corporate social responsibility is associated to, but not equal with, enterprise ethics. While CSR embraces the financial, lawful, ethical, and discretionary responsibilities of associations, enterprise ethics generally focuses on the lesson judgments and demeanour of persons and assemblies inside organizations. Thus, the study of enterprise ethics may be considered as a constituent of the bigger study of corporate social responsibility (Orlitzky et al. 2003: 432).

Understanding the CSR phenomenon

The most famous and renowned guru of all times the Nancy Lee along with the Philip Kotler defined the social responsibility as a very distinctive term used for the contribution in the society's welfare. The writers defined the corporate social responsibility for the oil industries as very important for the businesses. In defining the Corporate Social Responsibility they identified that it is a commitment in improving the overall community and for the well being of the people through the discretionary practices of businesses and the resources. The key point being highlighted from the above point is that the business oilers should consider corporate social responsibility as something beyond the benchmarks of social or judicial parlance. It perceives the oil industries to go beyond adhering to meeting the moral or legal tenets of the land or ethical expectations of the society (Garriga and Mele, 2004, pp. 53).

The trend in Nigeria is to identify this good cause and work towards the corporate social responsibility. Approximately each of the five hundred businesses which are working towards it and are earning positive respect from the customers. The oil industry so far is unable to do so as they are not engaged properly in managing their funds for the social and economic development (Maignan and Ferrell, 2004, pp. 3). The businesses globally define it by different names mainly the: corporate citizenship, corporate social responsibility, corporate giving, corporate philanthropy, community relations, corporate community involvement, community affairs, corporate responsibility, global citizenship, and corporate social marketing and community development.

Corporate social responsibility in Nigeria is still a topic of minor importance. Still no broad public debate has developed about the subject. It is directed by the public expectations for companies to provide for the employees and the locations of specific services. These expectations are often unspecific and individually oriented.
