Introduction

Social work is a professional activity of organizing aid and assistance to individuals and groups who are in difficult situations, their psychosocial rehabilitation and integration. In the most common form of social work it is a complex social phenomenon, an independent field of scientific and practical knowledge, career and educational discipline. The basis of social work is linked to forms of social support that occur throughout the development of mankind, which causes it to develop as a scientific discipline, which is the product of Western modernity. Social work must be constantly updated with what is happening around the world, which must have the knowledge about the social and economic problems that happen in the sectors. Contemporary Social Work must be consistent with the ethical-political and ideological constituent. Since its social commitment must be capable of responding to these demands and, from its technical and operational approach, be able to establish new fields of action and research to have the possibility of theorizing reality from the point of view of the actor -subject and from the culture of the minorities know their needs and desires to be included (Hardcastle, Powers & Wenocur, 2004, Pp. 91-143). This paper discusses the skills, knowledge and professional behaviour required of a social worker in contemporary social work.

Discussion

Social work is now understood as a combination of three components: science, academic discipline and the specific type of activity. In this case, social work as a science is also exploring the field of human activity, the function of which - to develop, organize knowledge about a certain reality - social and specific social activities (Watson & West, 2006, Pp. 27-29). Therefore, the key functions of social work professionals include:

Providing information and social connections with agencies socioeconomic resources (joint networks).

Understand, manage and promote existing resources among potential users and professionals in other fields of science that may be in contact with potential users.

Among others are:

Receive, guides, educates individuals, families, groups and communities in the peaceful settlement of their conflict through a culture of dialogue and consultation.

Make social research to help identify and interpret the causes of social phenomena that occur in any context considering alternative solutions to them.

Participate in the management, design, implementation, evaluation of plans, programs and projects aimed at improving the living conditions of the community, both public and private institutions.

Participate in the design, program management personnel, labour welfare, social security and occupational health.

Management programs and social development projects with government agencies and NGOs.

It is part of interdisciplinary teams working on improving the quality of life of people through socio-educational processes of promotion and prevention.

Delivery or treatments applied in psychotherapy or family therapy to individuals, couples, families and groups (Shardlow, Doel & Johnson, 2010, Pp. 187-194).
