HIV/AIDS: A Contemporary Health Issue Considered To Be Of Global Significance

Introduction

HIV/AIDS can be considered as an emergent health issue. This is the issue which is serious and severe enough to be considered of global importance. The urgency of the HIV/AIDS is an epidemic that is not only a medical problem. Currently, HIV infection has spread to all sectors of the population, including the wealthy people (McMichael & Butler, 2006, pp. 15-24).

Unlike other diseases diagnosed HIV infection is accompanied by a host of social and psychological problems, internal crises, stress, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships, which appear long before the time when a person may require medical treatment. World experience shows that the AIDS epidemic is undermining the national economy: reducing the number of working people who are losing skilled staff, reduced productivity. For the prevention of AIDS, a person needs to spend 8-12 thousand dollars a year. Treatment of patients with AIDS also requires a lot of money costs. People living with HIV/AIDS not only need treatment but also the support of people around them (AlKhatib & Tang, 2012, p. 6).

To date, over 50 million individuals on the earth are living with AIDS or HIV. Every day there are 15,000 people become infected with HIV or AIDS. About 80% of HIV infections in the world occur in unprotected sexual intercourse between a man and a woman. Over 20 years of experience in the anticipation of HIV or AIDS infection in clearly explains that the spread of this virus via usage of drug can reduce and even stop, if not promptly take comprehensive and sufficient preventive measures intended at injecting drug users. That is the main reason of considering HIV/AIDS, a contemporary global health issue.

Discussion

According to the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO), from 34 million people of HIV/AIDS globally, over 23 million are in Africa. In 2011, about 1.7 million people in HIV/AIDS killed, which is 600000, fewer than in 2005. The number of new cases of HIV has decreased in recent years, largely due to treatment with ARV drugs (AlKhatib & Tang, 2012, p. 6).

One of the most effective ways to prevent HIV/AIDS is by showing that treatment is possible. HIV-positive people are more prone to testing and treatment, which helps to limit the spread of the disease. It also means that the taboo that surrounds the disease breaks down and it becomes easier to talk about prevention, which is one of the basics of HIV/AIDS prevention. In 2011, new findings showed that an HIV-positive person who got treatment reduced the risk of passing the infection to their partners by 96 percent. MSF has treated nearly 230,000 HIV/AIDS cases in 23 countries, more than 200,000 sheep, and ARV drugs. Each country is trying to collaborate with different organizations of ...
