Docklands Light Railway, commonly known as DLR is a part of Transport for London.(www.tfl.gov.uk). In 1997, the idea of extending Docklands Light Railway to Dagenham Dock was put forth and investigated. All the possibilities for extending Docklands Light Railway to Dagenham were analyzed in order to achieve the project in a period of ten years i.e. by the end of 2007. Despite these planning's the idea could not be put to work because the land that was to be used and the proposals for developing the project were not fully established. The time period over which the area could be refurbished was to go beyond 2008.
In 2002, many new homes were developed in the barking riverside with a figure estimated to be 11000. Moreover, a number of employment opportunities were created as well as many new homes were also established in South Dagenham. The plans for development emerged after these significant changes. The plan for the barking riverside was referred to as the London Plan. The proposals that emerged for the reestablishment of the Thames gateway refer it as a place for significant growth related to housing as well as a major place for employment opportunities.
It was requested by The Transport for London commonly known as TFL, and the Greater London Authority known as GLA initial studies shall be conducted to determine the feasibility of the options for possible routes. It was also proposed by the authorities that the feasibility for the costs involved in the extension should also be taken into account. The officials of the Docklands Light Railway Limited in 2002 appointed some consultants to study and sketch the extension of the Docklands Light Railway Limited In east from the present network. Engineering aspects were to be studied by these consultants. The study were completed by the mid of the year 2002. The areas that were identified for possible extension were Renwick Road, Barking town centre and Dagenham Dock.
After further studies and consultations made with the stakeholders of the company, it was decided that the most feasible route that can be extended towards the eastern zone was drawn Docklands Light Railway Limited to Dagenham Dock. The basic reason behind this were the possible opportunities of interchange; the necessity to completely address the proposed area of the Barking Riverside; and the aspiration for the prospective of the Docklands Light Railway Limited to unleash sites further on the eastern areas.
Docklands Light Railway Limited was, in 2006 instructed by the mayor of London to further expand the work. The officials of Docklands Light Railway Limited in response to the guidelines of the mayor further chalked out the route in order to carry out the said extension. In order to review the previously proposed routes and develop a comprehensive route between Dagenham Dock and Galleons Reach, a team of professionals was appointed by the official of the Docklands Light Railway Limited.
