Task 1(A)

Principles of a good propping system

A good propping system should be able to meet the challenges that are presented; in this case, since it is a crammed up and congested city site, therefore, it should be able to be portable and should be easily transportable.

The props should be economical and should not be very costly, and should be able to adapt to any situation or environment.

In addition, the propping system should be strong and sturdy, in order to withstand heavy loads which come on it, besides being portable.

It should be able to act as support for formwork on a temporary basis, so that it may offer support to the reinforced cement concrete beams and floors.

The propping system is very useful in the replacement of a permanent support during repairing works, besides acting as raking shores, in order to provide solid support to formwork for walls, columns and staircases (Randolph, 2003, 423).

The propping system is widely used to replace permanent supports, to support canopies and lintels, as concrete or brick work sets.

It is very important that a propping system should be able to take up heavy loads, and should be strong.

The props used should have interchangeable sections.

The propping system should be such that it should be able to take up the load of the structure, because if it fails, then the entire structure may fall, putting in the process, the lives of hundreds and thousands of people at risk. It is important to realize that the propping system should be sturdy and should be able to achieve the objective it is supposed to achieve.

A propping system could be of many times; however, the basic purpose of the system remains the same, that is to provide a solid support to the existing structure and to prevent it from falling.

It should be very strong and it should also be economical, so that the cost of the project does not exceed the amount which is allocated for a particular project, so as to cross the total budget of the project.

Care must be taken that the project's requirements are fulfilled, and the propping system is an important element, since during construction, the entire team of engineers and contractors relies on the system in order to prevent the structure from falling.

The structure or frame tends to become vulnerable at the time of the construction, and when cutting of floors takes place, it means that the structure could be in danger. Hence, a solid and sturdy propping system ensures that the construction activity takes place without any safety fears or apprehensions (Rausche, 2005, 500).

Task 1 (B)

Structural issues arising out of insertion of walls and floors

Several structural and build ability issues will need to be taken into account when contemplating the removal of the walls and internal floors of a building which is more than 100 years old. Since new elements need to be inserted, structural issues need to be ...
