Conduct Disorder and Parenting Styles (Research Proposal)

Abstract

The purpose of this research proposal will be to undertake the vital domain of conduct disorder. The paper will discuss the effectiveness of counseling techniques that are currently available to those suffering from Conduct disorder and the prescribed treatment techniques. The proposal will also discuss the theories that can be said to be relevant to the subject at hand. Before concluding, the paper will discuss the methods for research and provide a glimpse into the expected results.

Conduct Disorder and Parenting Styles

Getting into trouble is simply a part of growing up. The individual is not always to blame. There are times when they are unaware of what is going, of their surroundings and what the consequences of their actions might be. This process of growing is the primary reason why parents overlook an incident in which their child might be getting into trouble. Unfortunately, a child, adolescent might also be getting into trouble because of a complex mental disorder called conduct disorder. Diagnosis is commonly made during childhood and has a tendency to appear as repetitive ongoing destructive behavior. The behavior in question can be described as that which is inappropriate of the specific age group; a violation of everyday etiquette. Quite often, it can lead to antisocial behavior (Hinshaw and Lee, 2003).

Statement of the Problem

One of the biggest problems with the discussed disorder is that there is no precision testing in teenagers that can determine a patient without doubt. Decisions are reached only after the individual's history is carefully analyzed and their behavior is observed. A direct disadvantage of the late diagnosis is that treatment needs to be quick and as effective as possible to prevent any further damage to the individual and their personality.

Background

Not much is known about the specific causes of Conduct disorder. However, through experience and observation of numerous patients; scholar and psychologists have admitted to witnessing the disorder most commonly in children that have been victims of child abuse at one time or another in their life (Lahey et al, 2003). It was also fairly common in those children whose parents had, or currently have drug addiction and substance abuse troubles. Other possible reasons behind the disorder include exposure to family conflicts, gene defects and socio economic limitations. Further research has revealed that order is fairly common in males as compared to number of female patients (Nurcombe and Leckman, 2008).

When one tries to predict the exact number of patients suffering from Conduct disorder, the number seems extremely small. Possible reasons for this include the fact that many parents and elders simply refute the possibility of a disorder believing that the child is nothing more than a trouble maker and that he or she will grow out of it. Unfortunately, such is not the case and thus a consensus is fairly hard to reach. Defining the concept of breaking rules or defying authority is not only hard but quite near impossible.
