Concept Analysis of 'Concordance' Using The Walker And Avant (2010) Concept

Introduction

Patient centered care approach has been given considerable importance in health and social care sector. Even government has been devising strategies that could help foster patient centered care so to enhance health outcomes. Health care practitioners consent with patients with respect to the treatment being provided to them. Under such circumstances patients are willing to participate actively in decision making process often leading to desire where they wish to attain treatment according to their will and desire. Such a condition is described as concordance which is a form of planning and delivery of health care services based on the concept of partnership.

It is said that concordance often leads to adverse impact upon health outcomes of patients and also contributes to social and economic expenses. Concordance is considered to be an alternative approach to decision making that is consistent with patient centered care provided in health and social care sector. Despite of the consistency with patient centered care, the principle of concordance appears to be contradicting and incoherent.

To have a successful concordance it is important that both patients and practitioners involved must look for ways that can build a strong basis of adherence rather than laying adverse impact on the concept of partnership working, effect patient centered care and lead to adverse health outcomes for patients. Communication as a skill will be explored in the paper that can have a strong impact on successful concordance and can help lead to desirable outcomes both for patients and health and social care sector.

Concept Used For Analysis-Walker And Avant (2010) Concept

The concept of Walker and Avant (2010) has been selected to analyse the concept of concordance in health care sector. The concept will be used to analyse the impact of concordance on the health of patient and nursing practice of health care providers. The steps described under Walker and Avant concept are techniques are the modification of concept analysis strategies defined by Wilson in his method of concept analysis proposed in 1963. Walker and Avant (2010) concept helps to comprehend the concepts comprehensively (Risjord, 2008, pp.6).

Method

The technique for concept analysis, suggested by Walker and Avant (2010), comprises of eight stages from 11 different suggested stages by Wilson in 1963. Some of the steps in Walker and Avant method occur simultaneously, they describe the concept step by step so that it becomes easier to comprehend by the reader. The concept is selected, objective of the selected concept is defined, uses of the concept are identified, and attributes of the concept are defined, case model is then developed, and later consequences and antecedents are identified (Brush & Baiardi, 2011, pp.160).
