Concepts of Sociology

Anomie

Explanation

The concept was one of the most wonderful contributions of the French sociologist Emile Durkheim. He is considered to be one of the key founders of the early sociology which was not much accepted in its initial days. Anomie was one of the four identified distinct environmental conditions which were felt to be behind the suicide rate. Anomie is basically an environmental state; this is basically where the society actually fails to exercise the adequate regulations or the constraint on goals and also desires of the members. It also really essential to notifying is that the conceptualization of anomie by him is basically based on some of the really general assumption which regarding the psychological or even the biological nature of various different human beings. The basic viewpoint was that the individual happiness and the well-being of the individual is dependent on the overall ability of society which is for imposing the external limit over potentially passions which is usually no limits at all and also appetites that are characterizing nature of the human beings in a more general manner (deviance.socprobs.net).

Durkheim has also argued that conditions of the anomie can be used for explaining at least 3 different sorts of the suicidal phenomena.

First one says that the prosperity in the economic condition is highly associated with the rate of suicide attempts.

Second one tells that the anomie which is resulted from a brisk of change in the economic.

The third one is where he analyzed that how the inadequate regulation of desire for the sex can be effective over the high rates of anomic suicide. As the married man go for the option for suicide lesser than the unmarried ones (deviance.socprobs.net).

Later on the concept was changed a little bit by Merton who referred to situation in which there is lacking found for the among the norms of the culture about what are factors which results success in form of achieved goals in an individual's life and also the norms of the culture which are found some appropriate methods for achieving all of those goals which are the means for achieving them. Merton also made the study even richer by making use of the mode of adaptation which were five in numbers and were conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism and the rebellion (www.d.umn.edu).

The thing which makes the Merton's theory a really worthier one and an important reason for the far-reaching affect it actually make on the field of deviance basically lie on the ability for deriving the explanations of some sort of diverse assortment of the deviant phenomena which is from relatively simpler kind of analytical framework. This is specifically the theory of the deviance must be doing. The usefulness and accuracy of the explanation made by him regarding these kinds of deviant behaviors are separate questions (www.d.umn.edu).
