Computer and Its Impact upon Creative Skills

Introduction

Computers nowadays have become an essential and integral part of our lives. Computers cover a wide range of applications that make our lives easier to carry and make tough tasks easier for us to perform. Without computers, no one could draw a graph, calculate a very long equation, write an essay, or save millions of documents in a single piece of equipment. Computers store millions of information that can be retrieved in a matter of seconds. However, the development of computers, including laptops, did not happen overnight, but was a long process that has taken years in order for us to see today's computers as laptops and iPads (Tomeo, 2002).

One of the most important meetings that discuss the history of computers in Canada is the CIPS, the Canadian Information Processing Society. The meetings consist of a conference in which 28 sessions that deal with the latest technologies as well as presentations regarding the historical developments of computers in Canada. The history of computers in Canada starts in 1950s when several government agencies, such as the Canadian Atomic Energy Laboratories and the Defense Research Board, pressured many universities to build the first computer in Canada. The first computer was called UTEC, “in-house machine”, and it later came to be known as FERUT, the first operational electronic computer. The story behind the second line starts with production of Feranti Mark 1 in England by the British Atomic Energy Board. Later, the board lost its funds due to budget cuts by the British government. The University of Toronto then picked up this latest innovation in September 1952 and became the owner of the second generation of computers in Canada (Copler, 1997).

Literature Review

There have been many advantages to computers and its important features. Many researchers have focused on the software as the hardware parts of the computers. Therefore, the research has focused on how to make applications more attractive and easier to navigate by computer users. One of these computer applications has been the Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel, Power Point, Word, Access and Publisher. There are also other applications such as the saving documents in a file and creating a short cut to any saved documents (Sammet, 1985).

More advantages are associated with research on how to expand the memory of computers and allowing users to store more applications on their computers. Other research has focused on personal computers and other touch-screen computers. This research has led to many innovations that the world has witnessed such as the innovation of iPads where touch screens and the small size of the device have attracted millions of buyers around the world. This innovation has also sparked competition between other rivals, such as Samsung, which came up with its latest innovation this year by introducing the small laptops.

However, technologies including computers should be also focused on how to use computers in the ...
