One of the earliest models of ethnic or racial identity that has impacted resulting models was proposed by William Gross (1971). The model was proposed in an African American situation; however this model has suggestions for other ethnic assemblies. Cross conceptualized racial identity as a method including four stages: Pre-Encounter, Imrnersion/Ernersion, Internalization, and Encounter. The five stages are Encounter, Pre-encounter, Immersion, Internalization, and Emersion (Hall & Barongan, 2002).
