Introduction

James Joyce, an Irish novelist, is highly appreciated for the way how he experimentally used his language. His innovations in the literature art of novel writing comprises of dramatic entertainment, using a pattern of history, literature and mythology, thus creating a language of allusions and invented words, unique in their very nature, (Gorman, 1941).

William Faulkner, a Nobel Prize winner American short story writer and a novelist, is said to be one of the most influencing personalities of the twentieth century. He enjoys a great reputation, which is based mostly on the short stories and novels. He was also popularly known as a screen writer and also as a poet. Most of his works base on the Mississippi state. He was not much known until 1949, when he received the Noble Prize. He is known all over the United States as an important writer in the American Literature history, (Blotner, 2005). These two are widely read, understood and appreciated for their work, all across Europe and America. In our discussion, we will be focusing on the works of both the writers. For our discussion, we have chosen James Joyce's Araby and William Faulkner's Rose for Emily. E will be looking for the similarities between both the works, and also be pointing out differences, if any. Araby, by James Joyce is a short story, published in the collection Dubliners in 1914. A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner, an American author is a short story by American author, published first in the April 30 in the year of 1930 at the issue of Forum. The story takes place Mississippi. It was his first short story being published in a national magazine.

The short story, Rose for Emily tells us about Emily Grierson, a woman who lives a life filled with many disappointments. She lived in a house that was the best in the town. She had no children as she was unmarried. During the story, it was a sad event that she lost her father. For the first three days she was in a complete denial of his death until she becomes more disappointed, she gave away her father's body for the burial. Sometime later, her lover also passed away, and then there was this smell around her place that upset the people of the town. The people, instead of complaining for the smell, decided to get rid of it by spraying lime all around the cottage, and soon the smell went away. During his days, her father had a lot of money. They had wealth in such great amounts that when the town was in need of a financial help needed financial in 1894, it was Emily's father who came forward and gave loans to the Colonel Sartoris, mayor of the town.
