Comparing Academic Progress Of Children In A Bilingual Program And Monolingual Program

Introduction

In today's era, with the increase in globalization, the importance of linguists has increased. The people around the world require linguistic skill in order to interact with other people in the environment who belong to different nations and speak different languages. In different countries and different educational centers and institutions it has been found that children are given the education in different linguistic programs. This has created and issue in the educational sector, particularly in the educational institutions that are in the area of minority. The children in the minority areas are usually given the education in mono-linguistic educational programs that creates the negative impact upon the children with monolingual academic background when they go to get higher education in different universities and colleges.

There are many critics related to monolingual academic education as this deprives the children from many important skills and knowledge that children require in their professional life. There are many supporting arguments related to bilingual academic programs. In today's era, the modern educational systems are giving children bilingual education. In bilingual programs the students are taught English language so that the students can understand the academic courses that they are studying.

Purpose of the study

There are many children who speak their native language but also learn other language which, as a consequence, brings about many advantages to the children in their future development. To understand the differentiations among the monolinguals and bilinguals therefore becomes the issue of interest. The question on how the relation of language proficiency to the achievement in academics is relevant to the education of monolingual and bilingual children. Children getting education in non-native countries may suffer language misunderstanding which may affect their educational training as well as their carrier in long run. Children may have the exposure of wide variety speakers and therefore their interaction may be not that much effective in absence of linguistic skills. Studies and research show that object properties have been relied upon by the monolingual more heavily as compared to the bilingual children.

There are many issues in the education environment relating to the educational programs either they are bilingual based or monolingual based. For many educational centers, the bilingual educational programs have many benefits as compared to the monolingual programs. The children in monolingual and bilingual educational programs have been found to have different characteristics that have been developed in them under the two different educational programs.

The purpose of the study is to know how the children perform in different linguistic patterns and how this affects their education. By knowing this we can come to know the differences among the academic progresses of the children who are given the education under bilingual programs and monolingual programs.
