Introduction

In the assignment, there is a need to compare the main characters of the books known as Oranges are not the only fruit and from the book and A Street car named desire. The names of the characters that will be compared are Jeanette and Blanche. The two characters are totally different from each other in both plays. The first character, Jeanette is about a young British girl who grew under a conservative family background in UK. On the other hand, the second character known as Blanche is also a young girl who is under an emotional stress because she is not living with her family. Though, she belonged to a wealthy family but due to the dispute, she is living alone in a small apartment. However, the main requirement of the topic is the comparison and contrast of both characters in the two unconventional plays. Therefore, all issues related to Jeanette and Blanche will be discussed in detail.

Comparison of “Oranges are not the only fruit” and a “street named car desire”

This is a well defined story written about a young English girl that grew up under difficult situation. The straitened circumstance was due to her mother's whole absorption in an extreme careful account of evangelical Christianity. The story takes place in England, and this is the reason why the characters are in English, and, majority of the culture presented in the story is English. There are many people who have a belief that American readers will be attached with the book, especially if they are from a, conservative religious, background. The book evidently highlights the insufficiency of the Christian religion because of the dealing with many problems of life and a negative impact it can create on human relations and on families that covers people who takes the issue seriously. The girl grows up as a child, immersed in the church, the Bible, and its teachings. She has a complete domination from her mother. The presence of father is not much and does not have a major role in development of the drama. When she turns fourteen, she gets involved in a sexual affair with a girlfriend having same age. It is fairly fervent, and, she falls in love. She attempted a horrible mistake for telling this to her mother about it and the whole community reacts in a terrible way (Butler, 1990, 58).

The girls get in a position to regret and end the relationship. Jeanette's regret was not natural and, she wanted to continue the relationship, but Melanie, the girlfriend, finishes up the relationship because of the wrong and right factors. Jeanette then tries to establish female sexual relationships finally breaking with her mother and the in church she spent her childhood. Melanie gets married and is last seen pushing a stroller.
