Introduction

The poem “the Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is an impressive literary piece that attracts the feeling of the readers, as well as their minds. However, the story is very short and precise, but it is rich and complete, and every word of the poem has a deep thought and meaning (Charters 2003).

The short story “the Necklace” is one of the most well-known Maupassant work; however, it is also one of the most enigmatic stories. The story is based on a diamond necklace that has been lost by the main character of the story Mrs. Loisel and both husband and wife are trying hard to earn enough money to return the money they took to buy the necklace. The story shows that how a needy family earns the money for ten years in poverty until they have paid off their debt (the money they borrowed to buy the diamond necklace) (James 1988).

The two poems explain the concept of trouble and pain; however, the story of an hour was not able to present the idea appropriately. Rather, it creates a feeling of disappointment for the reader in the name of trouble and pain. Certainly, the story of an hour is more likely to present the feeling of joy and happiness for the reader to a situation that was faced by Mrs. Mallard.

To compare and contrast a poem and a short story that differentiates joy and happiness with trouble and pain of life that how people face different situations in their lives.

The Story of an Hour

Mrs. Mallard had heart trouble and the news of her death was brought to her husband with many precautions. Her sister Josephine told her about her problem, and believed that she will be very upset after hearing the news of her heart trouble making her more ill. Her husband's friend Richards was there too. Richard was in the newspaper office when they received news of the train crash and the name of Mrs. Mallard's husband was leading the list of people who were dead (Chopin 1994).

She heard the same story as many other women listened before, with crippling helplessness to admit its significance. She immediately began to mourn with sudden and violent drop in the arms of her sister. When the storm of grief had subsided, she spent time in her room without letting anyone to join her sorrow (Chopin 1994).

The fifth paragraph of the poem emphasized on the ideas even more and carried more details. She could see “the tops of the trees shaking from the recent arrival of spring” with the help of the open windows. Every part of this paragraph explained that Mrs. Mallard got in touch with her life, and she started to hear sounds and to smell scents that were never felt before.
