Introduction

It is well documented that exercise cardio respiratory fitness, as well as strength training and endurance, have a positive impact on health. The moderate intensity exercise promotes many positive health benefits. Of these the most important effects found in subjects participating in regular physical activity include reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes. Chronic diseases are directly linked to obesity and body fat can be controlled, at least in part, through physical activity. Subjects who have adequate physical fitness have more effective functioning of the cardiovascular system and your body are more prepared to fight the disease. However, there is a point which reduces the return of these benefits, i.e. when overtraining and high-intensity exercise may actually increase the risk of traumatic injuries, reduce health benefits, and impair immune function due to extreme stress placed upon the body. Moreover, college athletes perform training regimes that put low chronic stress, increasing susceptibility to injury and overtraining. To compete at the elite level, they often require very high intensity training maintained over long periods of time. These athletes have a greater predisposition to injury as well as other effects of overtraining (Gregoriadou, 1999).

The sport allows people as individual entities have the vitality, vigor, strength, energy central to his duty in the social field in which they operate. In competitions there is a process of teaching and learning in teams, the need for assistance, compliance with the rules and respect for the contrary, the subordination of individual awards wins and the good name and the team win. Anyone who plays a sport in an organized manner is an optimist, persistent in the struggle for achieving their goals, showing mutual respect, honesty and sense of responsibility (Higgs, 2001).

The specialization in sport, or participation in an exclusive sport for a young athlete, is a controversial issue. With the tremendous success of high-profile athletes such as tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, Tiger Woods and basketball player Michael Jordan, many feel that the achievements of these athletes can only be achieved through early specialization in a sport.

College athletes perform training regimens that put them under chronic stress, consequently increasing the susceptibility to injury and overtraining (Bormann, 2001).
