Case study of Frontal Lobe Dysfunction

Case study of Frontal Lobe Dysfunction

Abstract

In the case study, the 48 year old subject suffering through frontal lobe damage may be treated through several different psychological techniques and tools, and while the treatment may not repair the damage sustained completely, there are several accounts of patients recovering fully if they have sustained injury through accidents. In this paper I will be examining the case study through a neurobiological perspective and suggest psychological interventions and techniques that may help in recovery and treatment of the patient through proven tools and techniques. The case can be compared in a way to the famous case study of Phineas Gage, as the patient himself is having difficulty returning to his previous state of mind, and is losing control of his managerial skills as well as pulling away from social interaction. There are also various implementations and tests that I will discuss in this paper that might further help in examining the cause of the patient's dysfunction.

Introduction

The frontal lobe is considered the largest in the brain, but it is unfortunate that it is not exclusively evaluated in scheduled neurologic examinations. This could be due to the fact that highly advanced and time consuming methods and testing strategies must be utilized in forming a conclusion about the function of the frontal lobe. As triumphant achievement of any cognitive job considered a frontal lobe task needs several brain regions both inside and outside the frontal lobe, some psychologists use the expression frontal systems disease. There have been cases in the past in which the dysfunctions of the frontal lobe have caused an effect to definite clinical syndromes. In the case study provided, Mr. A suffers from frontal lobe dysfunction and in his case, as with any relative cases, a detailed neurobehavioral assessment becomes necessary for further diagnosis and treatment. Evaluating the case study, it may be suggested that the he dorsolateral part of the frontal lobe has suffered damage, since the subject is having difficulty with the control and management processes of his workplace. The evaluation assesses functions of the brain that may potentially affect injuries. Functions that require clear and thorough assessment range from motor task, concentration, memory, decision making abilities, problem solving skills, language, movements relating to language, linguistic knowledge, impulse organization, spontaneity and social behaviour. In this paper, I will be evaluating the case study and examining the brain structure in order to suggest interventions for the patient.

Design

I will be presenting my findings in the form of a case study

Participant

Mr.” A” will be my participant in this case study, a 48 year old male who incurred damage to his frontal lobe through an accident

Materials/apparatus

I will be using the testing methods of continuous performance, executive functioning and motor input tests. I believe all these will be help them overcome Mr. A's barriers in social interactions through the provision of crucial information (Frith and Frith, 2006). Implementation

Frontal lobe dysfunction is acknowledged through an unexpected and dramatic modification ...
