Introduction

Background

Soda beverages giant came into being in 1886, by the curiosity of a pharmacist in Atlanta, named Dr. John Pemberton. This beverage first started getting sold at soda fountains. The credits for keeping the name of beverage as “Coca cola”, and for the trademark of discrete script goes to Dr. Pamberton's partner Frank. M. Robinson. Both of these elements are still being used by the company (www.worldofcoca-cola.com).

Before the death of Dr. Pemberton, he sold coca cola's in portions to different investors. But the largest shares were sold to the businessman of Atlanta, named Asa G. Candler. Through the tactful leadership and management of Mr. Candler, Coca cola expanded beyond the boundaries of Atlanta. In the year 1894, coca cola became portable through putting the sodas in bottles; Joseph Biedenharn was the first man to install this bottle factory for Coca-Cola in Mississippi. In 1899, Coca cola' bottling rights were purchased by three entrepreneurs from Asa. G. Candler to be sold worldwide (Ann, 2013).

Initially coca cola was invented as such a beverage which increases stamina and impart good health. “Coca cola” trademark was officially registered on 31st January, 1893 at US Patent office. After that, Mr. Candler through forceful advertising techniques and free distribution of coupons expanded the business largely. In the early times of 1920's, Coca-Cola Company's president Mr. Robert Woodruff, passed strict orders regarding the standards of soda fountains, where finalization and mixing of the drinks was taking place. For the production of quality beverage they launched a campaigned called “Quality Drink”. This campaign stated trained service people should be hired at soda fountains to make sure that coca cola was being produced and presented up to the quality and standard requirements (Ann, 2013).

1926 was a revolutionary year for Coca-Cola as Mr. Woodruff established the first foreign department of coca cola, which eventually became the first subsidiary of Coca-Cola Company currently known as Coca cola Export Corporation. This step was taken to expand the company internationally. Mr. Woodruff came up with a revolutionary idea of making a 6 bottle carton of Coca-Cola, to make it easier for consumers to take it home. 1933 was the debut year for automatic soda dispensers. Coca-Cola Company at the Chicago World's fair introduced its first ever Dole Master Dispenser. From 1939 to 1945 in the Second World War, around 5 billion bottles of Coca-Cola were consumed. Coca-Cola for the first time in1955 was put into cans for the military personnel in Japan & Pacific.

Diet Coke was introduced by Coca-Cola Company in 1982. Following the launch of Coca cola Classic, Coca Cola Company extended their line by launching diet coke. In the time of only 2 years, it had become the top most selling diet soft drink in the world.
