The American Civil War was regarded as the most horrific and perhaps the most significant event in the history of America. Difference between sects turned into a brutal war which led to over 600000 casualties and split the nation into two. The main cause of the war was slavery while the American society and politics was heavily influenced by the relations between different races (Walter, 1997). The war made America a strong force economically and after the war, there was a sense of unity and the urge to be known as a separate nation among the Americans.

Discussion

Shelby's quote suggests that the civil war is one of the most significant events in the history of America and it is the basis of what America is today. The phrase 'United States are' was replaced by 'Unites states is' which signified the fact that America was now a separate nation, a separate entity and it marked the creation of US constitution Shelby reflects on the changes the civil war has brought in the American society including the role of the government, the music, culture and the values of the nation. The number of casualties is greater than the number of all other casualties in other American wars combined. The war initially started as a fight on a relatively small scale but then it kept getting worse as there were fights within families and ultimately, it resulted in the death of over 2% of the US population.
