The Tricarboxylic acid cycle is a sequence of reactions that almost all aerobic organism use in order to produce energy by oxidizing proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and acetates into carbon dioxide. This cycle also provides precursors such as reducing agents and amino acids that are essential for several biochemical reactions. Due to its importance to several biochemical reactions, it is suggested that it is one of the oldest components of metabolism (Brandt).
