Childhood Obesity

Introduction

Childhood obesity is a condition in which the excess body fat is affecting the health of the adolescent. The methods of determining the body fat can be very taxing for doctors, as BMI is used to determine that. The trend of obesity has been on the rise in children and now it has been identified as cause of great concern among the doctors. Another term that has been used to define obesity is “overweight” in less formal circles. In this paper, there will be discussion about the reasons of obesity, the lifestyle which causes it and the possible remedies that can curtail it to a certain extent (Lowenstein et al, 2013). Obesity is a common disorder that can occur when you eat more than you burn. The cause of obesity can be for example lifestyle, environment, and heredity. Obesity pressures and strains the body which increases the risk for other diseases, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and musculoskeletal disorders of the joints. As a parent, one should pay attention when young children are becoming obese because the treatment tends to be more effective the earlier it is started.

Obesity and diabetes also run in families as hereditary. This is because of the effects of genetics. However, a person's environment also plays a significant role in many cases of obesity although genes are an important factor. All these obesity factors including lifestyle behaviors and genetics also lead to diabetes (Everett, 2011, pp.1776-1783). Obesity related to diabetes also depends upon the body hormonal functions. This is highly encouraged to control via physical activities and psychological factors. Some obese people eat in response to negative emotion. Medical researchers and doctors advise to maintain healthy weight and increase physical activities to reduce the chances to develop diabetes. Some major factors play an important role in causing obesity related to diabetes.

A measure that is often used is the BMI, body mass index, which is based on the ratio between the length and weight. When BMI is between 25 and 29.9, it is considered overweight, and when BMI is 30 and is obese.
