Essay Question: Memories of Childhood Abuse Can Be Repressed and Dissociated

Introduction

Childhood abuse is a major concern for women in many countries. Despite the growing consensus on the importance of determining the prevalence of child sexual abuse, an actual estimation of the number of victims has been hampered by various factors, including lack of consensus on what constitutes an “abuse.” The term Childhood Abuse can cover a range of circumstances from exposing a child to adult sexual activity either in person or through pornography, or touching a child's genital region either above or under the clothing, through actual oral or genital contact and penetration. Additionally, many cases are unreported, or the cases are reported at different times, often years after the actual incidents occurred (DelMonte, 2000).

Childhood memories are an integral part of a person's life. School teaches them a lot of things about life, not only inside the classrooms but also outside. During early schooling years, children face a lot of problems which seemed as if it was the end of the world. It also gave them the courage to face fears and stand up to challenges that the world puts us through. In grade school children usually are bullied by the other kids and did not stand up. Bullying is a common problem that people go through in their early life during their schooling years (Lynn, 2004).

According to Child Welfares website, those who are abused as children will often result in living an abusive lifestyle when they are older. One-third of abused children will one day abuse their own kids. It has also been found that victimized children will participate in drug, alcohol, or tobacco use throughout their lives. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reported that two-thirds of people in drug rehabilitation admit to being abused as a child. But why is it that people who are abused as children are likely to abuse substances and be violent throughout their lifetime? This question can be analyzed by studying it from an environmental, socialization, psychological, and a biological viewpoint. The way in which the memory of a person works depends largely on their life experience and the specific cognitive demands on that person in everyday life. Running a household, working as bookkeeper and play darts are activities that use memory in different ways (Lo, 2007).

Discussion and Analysis

Mental health services should be chosen very carefully. All psychologists are required to be licensed or certified by the state in which they practice. Many states require current and continuing education, which I feel is important to ensuring that they are up to date on the latest discoveries in their field. It is also important that a patient be very comfortable with their psychotherapist in order to get the best help possible. If they are uncomfortable, they may be inclined not to be honest or tell all that is necessary in order to receive the help they need ...
