Identify the Target Population

Texas, recently published data on child abuse by state and neglect in 2011, and if it were a novel, would be classified as a mystery. Tarrant County is not doing well in history. Tarrant County continues to have the second highest in the state for victims of child abuse, with 5.888 confirmed cases of child abuse. More children were abused in Tarrant County than in Dallas or in the counties of Harris, although Harris County has almost three times more children. The only county with abused children was Bexar County, home to San Antonio.

The compounds of mystery when you consider the ultimate victims, the children who died because of abuse. Eight children have suffered this fate in Tarrant County, which is fortunately a decrease of more than 18 deaths last year. However, Dallas had 30 deaths related to child abuse and Houston had 38.Related to the abuse of Tarrant County rate of infant mortality was by far the lowest in the Dallas, Harris and Bexar last year. This could mean that Tarrant County does a better job of identifying the victims and get help for these children. This could mean that abuse is less common but more serious in other countries. 2010 could be just a statistical aberration. But the problem is that the answers are not clear, and get those answers is a much bigger challenge than ACH.Texas desperately needs to understand what is happening, so that good decisions can be made about how precious public funds are used. Prevention funding was reduced, and the outlook for the next two years is dark - with a deficit in the neighborhood of $ 17 million planned for the state budget.

More recently, primary prevention refers to “universal” programs designed for populations who have not yet begun engaging in abuse use. This type of programming focuses on the prevention of abuse abuse prior to the initiation of any abuse use. Secondary and tertiary prevention represents “targeted” programs focused on intervention efforts to reduce and eliminate abuse use among individuals who are already using. These types of prevention programs adhere to a risk-reduction or harm-reduction model that is more applicable to individuals who have already used abuses (Widon, 2008).

Understand Characteristics of Target Population Members

In Tarrant County activities that prevent abuse from occurring in high-risk populations are often referred to as secondary prevention. Parenting programs can be successful even after a family has been reported for child maltreatment—if the programs have the elements described above. Some studies have shown that risk is most effectively reduced immediately after the parent training. Thus, continued family support through a variety of services and educational opportunities may be beneficial to families over an extended period of time.
