Abstract

In this study we emphasize on the importance of chemistry in our daily life through different examples. The main subjects that have been discussed in the paper are precision and accuracy of the measurement in the retail products that are sold in the retail stores for our common use. The paper is supported with the real life examples of the precision and accuracy of the measurement. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the relevance of chemistry with our society.

Precision and Accuracy

“In science field, accuracy is a type of measurement calculating the level of quality closeness of a product to its true value. Whereas, precision is a measurement unit, also known as the capability of reproducing the same outcomes again and again” (Taylor, 1997). The dissimilarity lies within the description; it is dependent on your need that what results you want from the test for the proper utilization of these two measurement units.

Dependence of Society on the Precision and Accuracy of Product's Measurements

These days, our society is dependent on the precision and accuracy of measurements for the retail industry products sold in retail stores, for example a gasoline gallon, the potato's weight, or an oil gallon. These measurements have to be precise and accurate when it relates to how farmers sell their products such as tomatoes, soybeans, milk, peanuts, and cotton, by weight and or in a bulk sale. Like food products gasoline, water, oil, and several other liquid goods sold in quantity and if the measurements not accurately sold per gallon, then the United States government will not retain a profit from the barrel of oil, water, E-85, and several other liquid goods that purchased from other countries (American Chemical Society, 2012). I would have to say that this really is about supply and demand and the ability to generate a profit from the accuracy and precision of the weight and how much to sell an item for in most situations. Other ways our society is dependent on the precision and accuracy of measurements is within the food industry. If a chef ordered 500 pounds of potatoes because 500 pounds of potatoes will last until the next month and the delivery company only delivers 490 pounds of potatoes then there might be an issue for the restaurant and recipes that a chef can make.
