Introduction

During 1880-1910, American higher education underwent significant changes that eventually led to the development of the modern university. Some of these changes were attributed to educational support groups like the Committee of Ten 1982. The purpose of this paper is the present an understanding of the major changes that took place in American higher education in the late 19th century. This paper first presents the purposes and achievements of the then Committee of Ten, providing an insight into its contribution in the higher education.
