Certificate IV in Assessment & Training

Introduction

Through the use of problem based learning exercises, individual/group work, focused and creative classroom exercises, and varied teaching methodologies, the need to create a participative learning environment is highlighted by the awareness of such diverse learning styles (Gordon, 1998).

Visual/Auditory/Kinaesthetic

The learning materials are preferred to be seen by visual learners. In the ease of holding onto the information, a mental image for the visual learner must be created by the teacher. However, written instructions must be provided if a visual learner wants to master a skill. The instruction being given or the message is preferred to be heard by auditory learners. They must be given the appropriate freedom as through a task some of these learners may even talk themselves (Gilakjani, 2011). Sensing the movement and the positions of the task or skill is preferred by kinaesthetic learners. Discussion classes or lecture that allows them to do something are preferred more by these learners.

Theorist/Pragmatist/Reflector/Activist Learning Styles

When dealing with theories and models, the theorist like a definite and clear purpose for work and teaches most effectively. Between concepts, issues and ideas, the theorist also enjoys exploring connections and through evaluating and reading, questioning theory and discussion and problem solving, learns most effectively (Rae, 1986). Through skills training, explorative project work and open-ended questions the theorist learns least effectively. The pragmatists like clear guidelines, rather than theoretical prefers practical, relevant to a practical problem solving and employment/subject enjoys practical techniques and enjoys seeing how theory relates to practices.

Through practical problem solving and work based projects learns most effectively and from debate and theoretical discussion learns least effectively. The reflector learns from working independently, observing and learning, in discussion prefers passive roles and likes the opportunity to consider and think implications. Through independent study and individual project work lectures learns most effectively and with no time for careful planning from spontaneous activity learns least effectively. The activist through interaction and discussion with others benefits from the opportunity of ideas development, enjoys being the centred of attention, thrives best in situations, like, changing range of activities and enjoys new challenges and experiences. Through workshops, seminars, discussions and group work likes to learn most effectively and from writing on own, reading, labs and lectures learns least effectively.
