Introduction

Census provides the government of a given country a systematic tool to acquire and record information about its population. The census information is ideally to be collected from every household, though it may not be possible in some cases. The governments of the countries hire trained people for executing the census process smoothly and efficiently. It is crucial to record and analyze the census information accurately, as various decisions are based on the census information.

Usually, the census is taken over a period of ten years. This is because significant population changes take place in any country over a period of one decade, and hence the population planning must be revised to cope up with the increasing demands of population.

This paper discusses the methods used to take census and importance of the census and population growth. Two websites related to census and data collection are also described.

How the Census is taken?

The census in US is now taken through mail. Essentially, the intelligently designed very short questionnaires are sent to every mailing address in the US. With the form, the residents are informed of the data by which they must mail the form back to the census Bureau. The typical questions are about the name, gender, race, status of home (either rented or owned). The questionnaire is designed to be such a comprehensive, that a person would hardly take 10 minutes filling it. Once the form is filled, it is the legal responsibility of the citizen to mail back the form to census Bureau.
