Cell Phone Technology

Thesis Statement

The cell phone, once a high end luxury item, is now an ordinary necessity which has influenced and modified our daily life. There have been many different technologies added within the phone from the basic use of telephony to surfing the web. This has become a basic necessity for even the youngest of people, creating newer more evolving technologies and sparking controversy of its use. This paper will discuss the political, legal, economic, psychological, sociological, media influence, environmental, moral and ethical issues.

Introduction

A cell phone at its simplest is a portable telephone using wireless radio technology. Signals are passed from region to region, called cells. By passing signals from cell to cell, the radio coverage can be provided over a wide geographic area. In addition to connecting calls, cell phone technology today encompasses many other features, such as text messaging, internet access, gaming, social media and photography. These additional features and the general accessibility of cell phones have pushed their evolution from limited applications to connect business people to their offices, to personal use for emergencies only, to today's world of constant availability and updates through the phones. Cell phone use is widespread. Four in ten parents pay the phone bill of college kids, who typically consume between 10 and 40 Euros per month on calls and messages. Almost all those surveyed have a mobile phone (95.8%) and use it daily (85.1%) both to send messages (88.1%) and calls (84%).

Today's cell phone technology is a natural consequence of continues development of radio communication, which begin in 1800s. Marconi has played a very crucial role in the development of radio technology. This technology continually grew in early and mid 1900s. Communications used by Marines was very beginning of mobile technology. The development of the transistor was a breakthrough, which eventually led to another bid innovation in radio-based mobile technology. During 1980s, various mobile telephony standards were developed in U.S. In Europe, NMT became first successful cellular system, which also allowed international roaming.

Afterwards, there has been no stopping of innovations that have been accomplished within the mobile industry. Innovations and applications such as GSM, SMS, MMS, Edge, 2G, 3G and many more are in the pipeline. All these technologies have changed our social paradigms and there no doubt that future innovations will continually affect our current social boundaries. Cell phones have come such a long way since their first debut to the public in 1984. The very first cellular phone available was from Motorola and weighed two pounds and only offered thirty minutes of talk time after a complete charge with no additional features at the time it was produced, but then it was simply a technology break through to have been able to produce such a product in the first place.

Although all the talk was about creating a cellular phone in the years before no one really knew how to go about doing it and technology needed time to figure out a way to ...
