Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Introduction

Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (cognitive-behavioral therapy or, CBT) are a group of treatment of mental disorders (phobias, addiction, psychosis, depression, anxiety) who share an approach in which the therapy must be based on knowledge, derived of scientific psychology and obey protocols relatively standardized whose validity said to be based on evidence. Standardizing the practice of CBT has contributed to the recognition of their effectiveness by their reproducibility is a requirement of the scientific process.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on thoughts and behaviors that affect our well-being and have an impact on our management of stress and difficult situations. The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy is to develop ways of thinking and behaving in a way that promotes a better mood and self-esteem and an enhanced quality of life (Beck, 2009, pp. 567-578).

Critical Evaluation

This study shows that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) can be overcome by cognitive behavioral therapy. It is an effective treatment, and shows that patients who participated in his treatment reduced their anxiety and disorder. However, in this study benchmark not achieved, also sessions were less than mentioned. Instead of 12 sessions, there were only 8 sessions. Also, there is no enough time for patients to completely understand the techniques to control their anxiety and depression. If we look at the therapists, they are not very much trained, and are only students. Moreover, if we compare CBT for GAD and RCTs (Randomized Control Trials), the RCTs seem to be more effective in treatment as compared to CBT. The reason could be that the therapists in RCTs are more experienced, and understand their patient's conditions properly. Also, for this study results could have been different if right patients were selected. Participants who were selected for this study had already low anxiety level, whereas studies shows that CBT is effective for those individuals who have moderate or high level of anxiety, so the effectiveness of results that CBT reduces not much of anxiety or depression as compared to RCTs may be due for this reason. Adequate treatment or in-clinic interviews not conducted regularly to understand the patients in a better, unfortunately, this practice left patients undiagnosed and unmeasured after the treatment. The dropout rate is high in this study as compared to the benchmark of RCTs. So further research is required to analyze the causes of such a high dropout rate, also analyze the acceptability of CBT in patients for the treatment of anxiety and disorder. No doubt this study is effective, but if we look it in a broad view it does not seem to be whole, comprehensive study. This study does have its drawbacks starting from criteria for selecting patients to the inexperience therapists. Also, it provides less time to participants to fully train themselves to deal with anxiety and disorder. After the study, patients were not given appropriate feedback to improve their condition, so this is an effective study for literature, but not much comprehensive study as it does not consider all the factors which may made ...
