CAUSES OF ATTRITION

Predictive Factors Associated with Attrition among a selected Sample of

Community-based Mental Health Centers

Abstract

Attrition results in a loss of restrictive mental health resources, causing agony to the facility in their investments and expenditures in the related instruments and therapies. It is therefore, important to study or rather “predict” factors that lead to an eventual attrition from treatment. Studies found out that patients tend to abort the treatments they receive when encountered with problems such as their economic imbalances in personal lives, lack of flexibility in the treatments they receive, spending restraints, too much expectations from the treatments by the staff members, lack of therapeutic culture and affection towards the affected patients and patient-to-patient relationship issues. The staff suffers resultantly, and adheres to either resigning from their jobs or displaying a very de-motivated approach towards their work. It is necessary to foresee such issues as predictive factors through a detailed analysis in order to devise preventive methods that can be implemented on a proactive basis for the well-being of both the client and the care-giver. Current interventions for reducing attrition do not seem to be effectively addressing the core issue. It is essential to understand the predictive factors that compel the patients to abort the treatment and resort to living untreated and unattended.

Predictive Factors Associated with Attrition among a selected Sample of

Community-based Mental Health Centers

Introduction

Attrition to treatment or premature dropouts from the healthcare centers is a very problematic issue for a number of participants operating in the mental health care service facilities, other than only the patients. This research paper aims to describe the predictive factors associated with attrition among a selected sample of the two chosen health care centers of the New York City: Mental health America (MIA) and New Horizons Recovery Center (NHRC). The literature review on the chosen theme will be based on understanding the grounds of attrition, why does it take place, the damages it cause to the stakeholders of such centers as well as to the patient himself and his family while also addressing, in brief, its avoidance and corrections through a number of measures evaluated. The research methodology will follow the review of the literature, in which a secondary data collection design and sample will further be elaborated upon.

Literature Review

It is a universal recognition that the receipt and delivery of mental treatments is not an easy job to undertake. It is indeed a very challenging task, marked by unexpectedly troubling events that result in patient frustration as well as the doctors' unease and chaos. The severity of mental health disorders are often characterized by low tolerance occurrences, aggression and hostility towards the practitioners, chaotic behaviors in times of urgent medical service requirements and a high degree of patient instability and resistance towards the treatment. In such difficult cases, early withdrawal from treatment, premature dropout or attrition from the treatment can further add to the miseries of those involved (Romans ...
