Introduction

Hurricane Katrina is a type of natural crisis or calamity. Hurricanes are natural calamities that occur due to the changes in the environment of the earth and the sea. The Hurricane Katrina, of the 2005 hurricane season in the North Atlantic Ocean, is one of the hurricanes that have been the most powerful of the history of the United States. Of all Atlantic hurricanes, it is one of the six strongest hurricanes ever recorded. Approximately 1,836 people died because of a severe hurricane and severe floods, making Katrina the deadliest hurricane since the hurricane Mitch in 1998. The damage estimated at over 108 billion dollars, about four times the damage caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 (Gutmann, 2011). This hurricane was one of the largest, having a radius of over 650 km including 190 hurricane force winds and tropical storm of 340. It made landfall near New Orleans and Biloxi on 29 August 2005 at 11:00, local time, partially avoiding the city of New Orleans, branching at the last moment to the east. The evacuation of the city attempted because of the risk of flooding of part of it, built below the level of the sea leading to waves of 11 meters. By the evening of 28th, Katrina had already killed. After the hurricane, many states in the United States either found to be under water or affected by it. Katrina had plunged New Orleans and desolated the entire state of Louisiana, becoming one of the most devastating natural disasters in the history of the region. The unprecedented disaster caused by the calamity led to a management crisis for the relevant authorities and new strategies had to be adopted to alleviate this calamity.

Responding Quickly

The Louisiana State University office acted immediately after getting the news of the Hurricane Katrina hitting the state. The LSU acted quickly by offering its employees, as well as, facilities so that handy support could be given to the relief efforts carried out by the federal authorities and the state providing relief to the victims of the Hurricane Katrina. The LSU offered medical facilities to the victims of the hurricane Katrina. The LSU also converted all the athletic facilities to a field hospital; so as to make sure that proper support given. The buildings of the campus also converted into shelters that provided a roof to the victims that desolated in the deadly hurricane of Katrina. The regular activities of the LSU remained suspended for eight days, to make sure that proper support given to the victims of the hurricane. The students of the LSU, as well as, the support team and the faculty members joined the army of thousands of volunteers from all around the world who joined hands to help the victims of the hurricane Katrina. This is a significant component of the crisis management process, as the human support element has to be present.
