No, I do not think that effective communication strategies were used by the nurse in this interaction with the patient's son. This is said because of the fact that, such situation are very tough, not only for the patient but for the members of the family, as well. Due to these tough situations the family members are also emotionally disturbed (DeWit, 2008). Moreover, the job of a nurse or a doctor is not only to treat the patient, but also to give moral support to the patients, as well as, the members of their family. For this purpose, the way I would have responded to the concern of the patient's son, if I was in place of the nurse, would have been something like the following:

“Don't worry, I can understand your concern for your mothers well being. It is our duty and responsibility to take complete care of our patients and to provide them with the best possible treatment, along with looking after their needs and wishes. We will surely take into consideration, all her needs and wishes. Well, it will be much better if you can also let me know things that your mother likes and might need”.

It can be said in regard to this communication between the nurse and Aakifah that the patient is already disturbed and frightened by the fact that she has to stay away from her family members in a hospital. Therefore, it can be said that the way of addressing Aakifah's was not really effective, as by the use of the word silly, the nurse might have hurt the feelings of the patient. However, the act of giving a big hug by the nurse to Aakifah was an act of providing comfort for the patient. It can be said that the nurse just needs to be careful in the use of the words in her interaction with the patient. The way in which I would have addressed the concern raised by Aakifah would have been like the following:

“Don't worry, you don't need to be frightened. I am here with you. These are not bugs. It's just spots on the ceiling (then I would have comforted the patient by giving her a huge hug)”.

No, it can be said that effective communication strategies have not at all used by the nurse in this interaction with the patients son. Responding to this concern in such a manner was by no mean an effective way to interact with the patient's son. She should have responded to Aakifah's son in a calm manner, and tried to explain him the overall situation. Furthermore, if Aakifah's son still wanted to talk to a man about her mother, the nurse should have let him do so, as it was his right to do so. The way in which I would have responded to the concern raised by Aakifah's son would have been as following:
