A. Where do you refer them for shelter, food, clothing, and health care? Briefly describe the agencies and criteria required to obtain assistance.
Since the family is a documented immigrant family, Food Stamps can be acquired for which the family needs to go to the county Department of Human Services office. For aged, people the Supplemental Security Income provides cash so that they can meet the basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter while WIC i.e. Women, Infants and Children is a benefit that the pregnant wife and child can acquire since the WIC caters to the needs of the pregnant women as well as children up to five years of age too buy food (South Carolina Appleseed Legal Justice Center, 2012).
With regard to shelter, the immigrant family can be referred to the public housing or Housing Choice Vouchers from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
For health care they can go for emergency room for treatment while many public health programs also provide immunization and tests for the diagnosis and treatment of dangerous diseases. Medical help can also be obtained from community health clinics.
Meanwhile the family can also apply for Temporary Assistance for Needy families (TANF) since it also provides temporary cash assistance to those families that comprise of one or more children less than 18 years.
B. What legal-ethical issues exist?
To avail many of the government benefits, there is a need to have proper documentation which the family has but other requirements include that of income requirements, having a green card, proving the permanent residential status for five years or the immigrants need to have the status of a refugee, or be victim of domestic violence or human trafficking (Broder & Blazer, 2009). The family does not currently has an earning member while they also do not have a home currently which might also prevent them from taking TANF. Furthermore, there are some public benefits that also may lead to be considered as a public charge which means to be considered as dependent on the government for subsistence. There are though other factors for a person to be considered as a 'public charge' but making informed choices to the receipt of benefits is essential for the future status of the family in the US (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, 2009)
