A Case of Mistreatment at Work

Introduction

This case is a mistreatment at workplace which is common in most of the organizations. Not all five fingers are equal; therefore, all the people cannot be similar. Some are very nice some are not. However, people should know how to treat with these kinds of people. After reading the case, I have identified that there are problems within this situation for both, Jessica and the other coworkers, Peter and Alex. There are many different issues among this group of people which create many problems within the workplace, but also on the outside of the workplace.

Some of the largest issues in this case involve the misuse of words and communication. After reading it, I have understood that Jessica, a newly college graduate, has some issues with those around in her new workplace. Being the only Hispanic worker in her group has made her self-conscious and unaware of how to handle the abuse that she has been taking from her coworkers. To Peter and Alex, the comments they were making were out of harmless fun and it was a strategy to include Jessica in their group. However, to Jessica, these so called jokes were racial and made it difficult for her to feel accepted when she was being taunted by her coworkers.

These issues were important to Jessica because her culture and background was important to her, and she did not want to feel being treated unfairly. Her boss, Tom, was not helping matters either. He was continuously trying to make her feel like their jokes were just a way of including her in their group, and he did not accept the fact that they were in fact harmful and disrespectful.
