1. Introduction

A local bus company (Blunderbus Limited) has contracts with the local county council for school runs. There are twenty different schools in the county. At the start of the academic year (as soon as the list of pupils for each of the schools is available) the various routes are worked out by the council and this information is sent to Blunderbus using the following form.

Please note that each bus route serves one school only. It is council policy that a bus will never have pupils from different schools on-board.

The information from the council is such that:

Each Pupil Id is completely unique (Boca Juniors' pupil id's all start with BJ, while other schools' pupil id's will start with a different two characters).

Each bus route is allocated a route number (e.g. R004). Some schools will be serviced by one route, some by more than one route and some by none at all.

In order to help Blunderbus with the administration of the system it has been decided that a computer system is required to:

Keep track of which driver and which vehicle were used on a particular run.

Produce an invoice at the end of the month to be sent to the council.

At the start of each day the manager will allocate a vehicle and driver for each route. Sometimes the bus and driver will be used for the morning and afternoon runs but on other occasions different vehicles or drivers may be used.

2. Minibus/Coach allocation.

Blunderbus operates many types of vehicles with varying capacities. The smallest is the minibuses with a capacity of 12, these can be driven by any driver. Coaches (with a capacity between 24 and 54) can only be driven by drivers with a PSV licence. (i.e. minibus). Doubler-deckers (with capacity up to 78) can only be driven by drivers with a “Super” PSV licence.

Drivers will be allocated at the start of each day depending on:

a) Holidays or any other predicted absences.

b) Having an appropriate license.

Driver Information.

For each driver the following details are held on file: Name, Address, Telephone Number, Driving Licence Number, PSV Licence Number (needed for driving a coach or bus). In addition the council require that all drivers must annually pass a special safety test. The test can be taken at various times in the year at Blunderbus as part of a one-day course run by an outside qualified trainer.

5. Billing Procedures

Each route number has one of five charge bands allocated to it (A/B/C/D/E/). The current charge for each of the bands is:

Charge Band

Cost Per Pupil Per Day

A

50p

B

60p

C

70p

D

80p

E

The council pays for a pupil even if they do not attend.
