Case Report on Facial Palsy

Case summary

The patient encountered in this case is 46 years old male. The patient was presented to the physician with a complaint of an acute episode of facial palsy. On examination, it was found that the facial palsy, also known as Bell's palsy, is secondary to an underlying disease. The patient underwent extensive testing, including the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) obtaining the STIR and T1 images, CT (computerised tomography) of the chest, and extensive bone scanning. After complete analysis, it was found that the patient has been suffering from prostate cancer. The examinations further confirmed the disease by indicating an abnormally high level of Prostate specific antigen (PSA). The patient had sclerotic bone lesions. The CT scan of chest, abdomen and pelvis indicated right ureteric lesion with associated pelvic and retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy and suspicious bony lesions. The patient was sent to the oncology department for palliative care.

Case Backgrounds

Prostate cancer is the condition that usually occurs at any time in a man's life. It can grow slowly over a period of time, or it can divide and grow rapidly metastasizing the surrounding cells as fast as it can. However, the major alarming condition is that prostate cancer usually presents with no signs or symptoms (7). The following case indicates the condition in which the prostate cancer was not diagnosed previously in the patient. This is the reason that makes it significant. Bell's palsy is one of the conditions that occur secondary to the disease. The occurrence of Bell's palsy proves that the patient was unaware of cancer, which increases the significance of the case in research. The major factor that has to be studied in prostate cancer is how the condition can be diagnosed earlier and secures the patient from the occurrence of secondary problems related to the disease.

Case Presentation

The patient is 46 years old white man, with no history of any heart of kidney diseases. The patient did not suffer from any kind of cancer or tumor in the past, and the last routine checkup was done 3 years ago. The body mass index was also found to be normal, and the mental status was sane and responsive. The patient does not smoke or drink. He came to see the physician with a complaint of tenderness and pain behind his back followed by an acute episode of facial palsy. He complained of suffering from Ocular pain and blurred vision (5). Hyperacusis and weakening of facial muscles was also evident.

Investigations

The signs and symptoms clearly indicated that the patient is suffering from facial palsy. However, the further investigation revealed the presence of an underlying disease due to which the facial palsy occurred. The examinations confirmed the presence of prostate cancer, which is responsible to elicit Bell's palsy in the patient. The MRI of the patient shows that the air cells of the right mastoids are thickened with an opacification of anterior epitympanic ...
