The overall objective of social welfare in any society is to achieve social requirements, health and economic and recreational activities for all members of society through the goals of therapeutic, preventive and constructive goals. This assignment seeks to identify of the current issues associated with social work practices according to the perspective of a social worker. A case study is given that will reveal the issue before us, highlighting one of the key concerns that require attention and resolution at the earliest. This case study has incorporated health and social care issues that require careful assessment, and consideration so as to prevent such drastic and adverse situations in the future (Department of Health, 2001b, 107).
The case study discusses the problems faced by Simone at her residence while she also suffers from severe disabilities. She resides in Winterbourne view, which is a private facility, and subjected to physical and emotional abuse from the facility's staff members. The staff members have humiliated such adults many a times, and have threatened them with harsh actions of violence that create an adverse impact upon their emotions and physical well-being. This assignment seeks to look into the situation from the perspective of a social worker. We will discuss the key areas including safeguarding the adults who are vulnerable to abuse and harassment, the concept of personalization as a result of various legislation, an understanding of inter-professional working that can intervene these practices while preserving the rights of the disabled adults, and other such concerns.
Safeguarding
A vulnerable adult is a person aged 18 years or over, who is unable to protect or “safeguard” himself from harm and exploitation of any kind. This may be because they have a mental health problem, a disability, a sensory impairment, are frail, or have some disabilities and illness. It is obvious that in developing countries, as well as in more developed regions, there is a greater likelihood that people with disabilities and their families more often than the rest of the population living in poverty. These people are vulnerable to violence, threats and other forms of harassment from their fellowmen as a result of their suppression and deprivation that makes them a victim of diverse societal abuses (Social Exclusion Unit, 2000). Disability increases the risk of poverty, and in conditions of poverty, increase the risk of disability. Prejudice and social stigma affect the lives of both children and adults with disabilities and lead to isolation and exclusion from their communities.
Safeguarding the adults can lead them to lead normal lives and attain peace with the society because they have equal rights to live a normal and happy life along with their fellowmen. Safeguarding these individuals mean protecting the vulnerable individuals from physical, sexual, psychological, material, discriminatory, domestic and institutional abuse; along with safeguarding them from any neglect or acts of omission, keeping their physical condition in mind.
