A well managed project usually involves a comparison of the project with the earlier version s of the projects. It is a very critical part of tracing the level of achievements associated with a project. Before one start to follow the schedule of the project as a project manager, a baseline is needed to be set for the purpose of comparison with the latest schedule in the later outcomes of the projects. As the project progresses an interim program is also needed to be saved periodically.
In order to set up a baseline or interim plan in an enterprise level project, one must be connected to Microsoft Project Server and the manager must have the necessary access for it.
Baselines
A baseline is defined as a group of approximately twenty reference points primarily in five different categories such as starting dates, finish dates, work, durations and estimation of costs that one can record to set the project plan after the completion and refining of plan. As the project moves ahead, one can set additional baselines up to a total of 11 for each project in order to help in measuring the variations in plan. As an example, if the proposed project has many different phases, then separate baselines at the end of each phase, for the sake of comparison of planned values against the actual data.
Due to the reason that the baselines give the reference points against one can compare actual project achievements. The baseline should include best estimation for the entire duration of tasks, start and finish dates, costs and other different variables of the projects that are supposed to be monitored. It also represents the obligations which are contractual in nature.
The information related to the baseline and consistently varies from present data may represents that the actual plan is no longer correct due to the requirements of review or due to the fact that the nature of the project has been changed.
If the stakeholders of the project show an agreement upon the fact that the differences associated with it can enhance or rework the baseline at any interval o0f time during the execution of project. One may find that establishing multiple baselines is usually useful for large projects or projects for which the baseline is proved to be irrelevant by too much variations in the scheduled tasks and costs.
Interim plans
An interim plan is defined as a set of current data of project that have been setup after the initiation of the project and they can compare against the baseline to assess the progress of the project.
An interim plan protects only two kinds of information.
Current start dates
Current finish dates
One can set up 10 interim plans for a project. If there is some requirements to keep the records of detailed data related to project during the phase of planning, it is better to set too many baselines instead ...
