Canter's Behavior Management Cycle: A Case Study

Introduction

This paper consists of a case study in which a teacher is focused towards minimizing the disruptive behaviors in the classroom by following the Canter's Behavior Management Cycle strategically. Also, it shows how does Ms. Stephanie tries to reduce the occurrence of inappropriate behaviors in her class and makes sure that David performs well from now on in the class.

What is disruptive behavior?

Disruptive behavior is any behavior that may interfere with the discipline of the class and may prevent the functioning of normal operations of a school, college or a university. By normal operation, it is meant the ongoing operations including teaching, activities in the class and allowing students to pursue different opportunities to excel in their careers (www. deanofstudents.unc.edu). Students in an educational environment are prohibited from engaging in any activity that harms or disrupts the academic environment. Children are sent to school so that they can become good educated members of a community. Their capabilities to make decisions are nurtured in the school which contributes to their future growth. However, there are a few students who find difficulties in adjusting to the established classroom environment and are not able to portray the desired behaviors (Aiger, 2010). Hence, it results in disruptive behaviors from the students. The negative behavior may include aggressiveness, social and emotional disturbances, engaging in unhealthy physical activities, being blatant or ignoring and devaluing the teacher's capability of imparting knowledge on a subject (www.deanofstudents.unc.edu). Understanding the causes and types of disruptive behaviors can help an instructor to decrease the occurrence of such behaviors (Aiger, 2010). There are various ways of controlling such behaviors in a classroom; one way is applying Canter's Management Cycle for controlling disruptive behaviors and maintaining a good learning environment for the students.

Case Study

David is a 9 year old school studying in third grade of an elementary school. He is reported to have exhibited disruptive behaviors constantly during the class. Since, he comes from a home where his father died three years ago, and his mother is a working woman who works day and night to fulfill the needs of the family, David has been facing a lot of issues. Her mother has been struggling to make sure that she gets the best for her son; therefore she does not get enough time to spend with her son since she has other children too (Cooper, 2011). He has a sister Amelia who is 16 years old, Frederick who is 20 years old and has a 21 year old girlfriend Maria. Amelia is always in the house either watching television or is found sleeping. Frederick and his girlfriend are in the house doing nothing and fighting and arguing all the time. When David's mother comes home every day, she has to settle everything in the house and maintain the discipline the siblings are not following. As a result, David is exposed to destructive behavior, and he is forced to exhibit such behaviors ...
