Are prisons appropriate for the non violent offenders? Can we afford such prisoners even after having crowded jails? Should they be given other alternative punishments? It is a very strong and debatable topic and is considerably very important to discuss nowadays when United States of American is having a higher rate of incarceration than any other nation all around the globe (Editorial: We Can't Afford).
Introduction
The purpose of this essay is providing a very strong debate on either poisoning of non violent offenders should be continued or there should be alternative punishments for non violent offenders? This study also provides brief argumentative factual evidences on whether we can afford non violent offenders in jails and we cannot afford them along with justifications. This study will view this issue from both favor and against perspective. Although from past study and analysis of history of imprisonment in United States it has been viewed that this issue is not new to be figured out (Editorial: We Can't Afford). There has been a detailed analysis on this question which is still unresolved as across various cultures, the argument on imprisoning the non violent offenders varies. Mostly views of conferring them with alternative punishments has been opposed for centuries and this has been the most intensely discussed and fervently arbitrated topic among judicial and social endeavors and in politics. Therefore for attaining a clear understanding to some of the technical terms of non violent crimes, imprisonment and other alternative punishments, it is necessary to first make an understanding of these terms and the functioning of the process and legal laws to be followed that are pertained for eliminating any confusions (Anonymous, n.d).
Since the imprisonment in USA is at greater rates than in China, Russia and India rate of incarceration. Nowadays we can say that out of 100 people in United States, nearly one and two are in prison. This increase in crimes is attributed towards three of the factors; non violent crime incarceration, mandatory sentencing and three strike police (Editorial: We Can't Afford). All of the non violent crimes have been prosecuted in federal courts or in state which carry long sentences in prison, huge fines along with the social cost for the incarcerated person, all of this cost have become nothing more than a loss to the government economy if effective steps will not be considered in dealing with this issue (Dwyer, n.d ).
