Introduction

Greater London Authority is a very unique organization that works for a citywide unique objective to be achieved. The objective behind the functioning of this organization is to devise strategies for the betterment of the city of London. 0The Greater London Authority was established as a result of the Greater London Authority Act in 1999. Some new responsibilities and powers were given to the Greater London Authority as a result of the GLA Act in 2007. The new powers and responsibilities were directly given to the mayor and the London Assembly regarding different areas of development in the London City. These areas of development include the mayor to make strategies and decisions regarding planning, housing, climate changes, health, waste and culture (Greater London Authority Act 1999, 2012). The Greater London Authority is a very important organization that plays a vital role in the development of various areas of London City. An important significance of this organization is that the mayor is directly related to the Greater London Authority to impose his powers and justify his role and responsibilities for the betterment and development of London. A brief discussion about all the different aspects of the powers, responsibilities and the policies of the Mayor and the Greater London Authority is presented as follows.

The powers and responsibilities of the Mayor and the Greater London Authority are diversified. The three main area s0f responsibilities of the Greater London Authority and the Mayor include social development, economic development and wealth creation and environmental improvement. These are the three main responsibilities for which this organization works. These responsibilities of the mayor and the Greater London Authority are based on six important themes. These themes are categorized as sustainable development, health inequalities, and community of safety, opportunity equality, health and changes in the climate. These are the most important responsibilities that the organization and the Mayor function to achieve.

The powers that the Mayor has to fulfill his responsibilities are discussed as follows. There is a range of powers that the Mayor has and can implement to achieve the targets of the Greater London Authority. The Mayor has the power to plan and develop strategies for improving the strategies for transportation, economic development, planning and development and tackling the environmental issues in the city of London. Secondly, the Mayor also develops spatial plans for the city of London to enhance the housing strategies and systems for the city of London.
