Logistics and Operations Management of Processed Food Products
Introduction
The scandal of horsemeat in Europe is regrettable and recent reports have represented the concerns of people about mislabelled products containing horse meat availability in supermarket shelves. The investigations are ongoing with respect to the scandal of horsemeat in beef burgers. Although, many investigators argued that horsemeat products should not be of great concerns because outside the United Kingdom, in most of the locations the horsemeat is not banned. The major reason is that horsemeat s consuming under the privileges of the European Union but the most important issue associated with this is the presence of phenylbutazone, which could be lethal to the human health as per the clinical investigations. Another issue is the straight violation of transparency of food chain and labelling regulations in the processed as well as in packaged food products. Due to this recent incidence, there is a strong chance that Russian Agriculture Authority may apply tough rules and regulations in terms for importing finished food products from the European Union due to this horsemeat scandal. However, European veterinary services have not disclosed the names of companies involved in the scandal to Russia (Interfax, 2013).
On the other hand, European national food authorities are not considering horsemeat scandal as reason for creating more panic because the food safety is not at risk but alerting from now onwards, with respect to the horsemeat scandal can avoid future issues in the processed food sector. Drugs and other related chemical substances are common in horsemeat sector places as compared to the conventional livestock, but these chemical substances are the source of various health related issues and of course this issue could create worries among the consumers from all over Europe. For that reason, the laboratories should perform tests in order to check the possible presence of chemical substances in processed meat and the findings must be shared with the public (Verbeke, 2013, pp. 1-3).
