Introduction

The American Legal system was not always the way in which it can currently be seen. It has grown with time, been categorized, built upon and divided into a specific hierarchy. This has insured that justice will be provided to the general public for many, many years to come. The purpose of this paper is to take a brief look at how the legal system and courts developed in America. The paper also provides a brief glimpse of the specific courts present in the United States.

Thesis

“The United States legal system has grown and improved tremendously from its humble origins after the revolution. The system ensures that justice is provided day in and day out, for many years to come.”

Where did our legal system originate from?

The United States of America can trace its roots all the way back to Europe, when America was nothing but another colony under the rule of the crown. Many of our laws are largely influenced from our origins. They have gradually changed with time and as the American people began to develop their own identity (Walston- Dunham, 2011). This has been a positive change; a change for good. Freedom is crucial to the American way of life and the laws are reflective of that. The incorporation of juries reveals that the justice system is adamant that the public play a role in determining, distinguishing and passing out justice.

Development of the court system

Towards the end of the 17th century, Supreme Court judges were required to serve in circuit courts as well.
