Chapter 1: Introduction

Background research

Interest of large international companies (such as Bill Adama Europe Limited in this case) as the unit of analysis is dominated by the internationalization of the literature, despite the fact that small and medium-sized firms (such as Bill Adama Europe Limited in this case) are increasingly internationalized (Koviello and McAuley, 1999). Consequently, there is growing awareness of the need for greater internationalization of research. Oviatt and McDougall (1997) argue that recent changes in technological, economic and social conditions lead to new questions of research and alternative explanations of how firms (such as Bill Adama Europe Limited in this case) of internationalization. They also argue that these changes contributed to the global trend of accelerated internationalization. Calof and Beamish (1995) found that changes in mediating variables, ie, resources, organization, strategy, or the environment, the impact of the internationalization process. Because these mediating variables change the company's progress more easily for the ultimate goal.

Problem Statement

In recent years, the acceleration of the internationalization of retail trade attracts the attention of both academics and market researchers (Hollander, 1970, Salmon and Tordjman, 1989; Threadgold, 1990, Alexander, 1997; Corporate Intelligence Group, 1991; 1994; 1999). Most of these studies sought to compile information and discern patterns from contemporary trends, as well as to offer predictions of future events. The result has been a lot of information on the latest models of internationalization, but little about how these models are compared with the long-term historical change. This lack of historical context is very important because, while many explanations have been proposed for the internationalization of retail trade, only long-term trends in international retailing can help analysts distinguish between first-and second-order determinants of entry.

Research goals and objectives

This dissertation aims to contribute to the new body of research on the internationalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) (Koviello and Martin, 1999; Holmlund and Kock, 1998; Kaufman, 1995;. O'Farrell et al, 1998; Camino and Cazorla, 1998). It aims, in particular, to deepen understanding of the special character of venture firms (such as Bill Adams Europe Limited) internationalization, ...
