A degree qualification will be needed to become a building surveyor, with further training also a necessity. You will need to choose a degree accredited by the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), or by other institutions including the CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building), BIFM (British Institute of Facilities Management), or ABE (Association of Building Engineers).

In order to be eligible to undergo a training as a building surveyor you will be required to have a degree from any subject related to geography, science, languages, economics and social science. Some colleges and institutes also offer preliminary courses to allow you to be better qualified to earn a degree as a building surveyor.

Becoming a building surveyor is not an easy task and you will need to take a very rigorous training program with at least two years of practical experience where your interpersonal and business skills will be taken into consideration and you will have to prove your ability to be a very detailed and creditable building surveyor. If you are interested in working as a technical surveyor, then you will have to take a further test to be able to be qualified for the post as well. This extra training can take another two years to complete.

A building surveyor can definitely aim at getting the best possible position where he wishes to work provided he takes the specific steps to follow the path that leads to a better job opportunity through training and education. In the public sector, most building surveyors will be working with universities, hospitals and governments and this is going to give them a very vast experience of the job that they are trying to secure.

Eventually with this kind of experience and some further training they can then become full project managers, which will give them the upper hand when it comes to the handling of the whole building project, the proper execution of the same and at the same time will be putting them on a higher ladder that will create better career opportunities for them in the future. Of course, this is very possible only if the organization has a basis of on- house training and merits. However, these opportunities do give building surveyors the capacity to start their own practices as well.

A building surveyor can work on many different projects at the same time and these can include ensuring that a project is completed within a specific budget and on time, advising the clients on the scheme of the projects and determining all the requirements that you need to know in order to handle the project. A building surveyor will be called to take a project that needs to be redone because of construction defects.
