Abstract

This dissertation will cover the use of Building Information Model in the UK construction industry and the legal issues that hinder a full collaborative and integration in the UK construction Industry. The detailed definition of Building Information Modelling is provided in this dissertation. A detailed analysis has also been provided regarding the traditional method of working in the UK construction industry and how Building Information Modelling changes the traditional construction method in UK.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background

Building Information Modelling is a method that involves the management and generation of digital images of functional and physical characteristics of a facility. The resultant building information models develop into shared resources of knowledge. This supports the process of decision making for a facility from its initial stages, through construction and design, through eventual destruction and operational life.

In UK, the construction industry is the one that demands large number of labours. Over the years, this industry has not undergone any significant changes. Conventionally, the construction project contains the specifications and drawings. The architects and engineers deliver these drawings to the owners/ clients of the planned project. At the time of delivery, the architects ensure that the proposed design is free from any defects, and that design is complete (Arensman, 2012). After this, the owner places the project for bidding. The mentioned contractors in the list do this bidding. The contractor with the higher amount of bid mainly gets the ownership of the construction project. This relationship between the common contractor, architecture, and engineer is established when common contractor gets the right of maintaining the construction ...
